How to send a video email

In the video, Steve explained how to use a webcam to record video messages, which can then be sent to an email address. Sending a video message, as he showed, can be a great way to show friends and relatives what you’re up to.

Sending and receiving video messages is as easy as emailing, as long as you have the right equipment. Here’s how to do it:

Get the software and hardware

1. Webcam. If your computer has a built-in webcam, you’re ready to go. You can also purchase a webcam for prices ranging from $40 to $80, depending on the model. One good choice is the LifeCam Show.
2. Broadband Internet connection. A broadband Internet connection, often just called broadband, is a very fast Internet connection. Video files are typically large, so a fast Internet connection makes sending and receiving these files a smoother process. Call your local cable or Internet provider to sign up for broadband Internet service if you do not already have it in your home.
3. Free software downloads from Microsoft. You’ll need to download the following software to get set up. These are quick and easy to install, and they’re free:
* Internet Explorer. We recommend Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), and you can also use IE6 or IE7.
* Silverlight. You will be asked to add Microsoft Silverlight to view the video player. Silverlight integrates multimedia, graphics, animations, and interactivity, and it is free.
* Windows Media Player is a digital media player and media library application used to play audio and video and to view images on a computer. Use Windows Media Player 11 with the Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, and use Windows Media Player 10 with Windows XP.

You’ll also need a Windows Live ID, which is a single sign-on service that enables you to sign in to many websites by using one account. If you’re already using Windows Live Hotmail, Messenger, or Xbox Live, you already have a live ID.

Create a video message

Once you have set up your webcam according to the manufacturer’s directions, follow these steps to create a video message:

Step 1: In Internet Explorer, go the Video Messages site. In the upper-right corner of the window, sign in to Windows Live.
Step 2: On the Actions bar, click Create new. The video player opens.
Step 3: Click the Record button and record your message.
Step 4: Click Stop when you’re finished.
Step 5: Click the Add recipients button.
Step 6: Do one or both of the following:
* Select your contacts from the list of contacts.
* Under Other, enter a contact’s email address, and then click the Add email address as a recipient button.
The contacts are automatically displayed in the recipient list.
Step 7: Click Send.

The recipients receive your video in a normal email message. All they need to do is open the message and click the Play button.
